    Vaginitis is inflammation of the vagina. Vaginitis is very common and is reported by as many as 75% of women at some point in their lives. Vaginitis is a diagnosis based on the presence of symptoms of abnormal discharge, vulvovaginal discomfort, or both. Discharge flows from the vagina daily as the body's way of maintaining a healthy environment. Vaginitis also can occur because of atrophic changes. Bacterial vaginosis is caused by proliferation of Gardnerella vaginalis, Mycoplasma hominis, and anaerobes.

    Vaginitis is the term used to encompass many of the specific disease which can infect a woman's genital area. Microscopic organisms can cause symptoms such as severe genital itching and unusual vaginal discharge. Vaginitis is identified by checking vaginal fluid appearance, vaginal pH, the presence of volatile amines (the odor causing gas) and the microscopic detection of clue cells. Vaginitis can be diagnosed and treated by a nurse practitioner or physician. Most insurance companies cover the costs of diagnosis and treatment.

    Vaginitis can also be caused from chemicals found in bubble baths, soaps, and perfumes. A foreign body inside the vaginal canal may also cause vaginitis. Vaginitis means inflammation and is often caused by infections, but may be due to hormonal changes (especially when a woman is going through menopause ) or due to trauma in young girls. Some infections are associated with more serious diseases. It is a common problem in all females. Frequent treatment with antibiotics make the problem more common in the female with sickle syndromes.

    Symptoms

    Vaginitis symptoms and treatment differ depending on the causative agent: bacteria, the protozoan parasite Trichomonas vaginalis , yeast, an allergen, or a decrease in estrogen. About 75% of all women will suffer from at least one yeast infection; half will have more than one during their lifetimes.

    Vaginitis is infectious or noninfectious inflammation of the vaginal mucosa, sometimes with inflammation of the vulva. Symptoms include vaginal discharge, irritation, pruritus, and erythema. Vaginitis isn't often a major health problem. But sometimes it can be serious. Vaginitis may be treated with good washing and avoiding products which may irritate the vagina, such as bubble bath. If your child has a foreign body in her vagina, it should be removed.
